Mid-November, the first “Sprachtreff” – part of the EU-funded project “Sprachtreff – for integration in the countryside” – will begin in Rhineland-Palatinate. 10 volunteers participated in the first training course on 29. October in order to be prepared for their volunteer work at the “Sprachtreff”.

The training course offered an insight into the practical work as a Speaking- and Reading-Mentor. How do I reach a refugee? How do I know which materials are appropriate and what is the best way to start a conversation? Questions like these concerned the volunteers during the training. During a practical exercise, the future Speaking- and Reading-Mentors learned what it feels like to read a document written in a foreign writing system by reading texts in Sütterlin. On top of that, Judith Schumacher and Helga Schwarze, both specialists from the “Büchereifachstelle” (literally: library specialist department) of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland (EKiR) introduced the participants to materials for the work with refugees and offered suggestions on how to use them.

The participants finished the training course well-informed and prepared for the work ahead and were excited for the start of the “Sprachtreff” on 13. November 2018.
